Meet Tamiko Honda: The 90-Year-Old McDonald’s Employee with 23 Years of Dedication

September 10, 2024 by Japan Daily Leave a Comment

The Remarkable Routine of Tamiko Honda

In the heart of Kumamoto City’s Chuo-ku district in Japan, you’ll find an extraordinary person who has achieved legendary status in the realm of fast-food employment. Meet Tamiko Honda, a 90-year-old who proudly claims the title of the most devoted employee in McDonaldland.

For the past 23 years, Tamiko Honda’s daily routine has been nothing short of inspiring. Five days a week, she rises with the sun, waking up at 4 am to catch a bus to the local McDonald’s outlet. Her workday officially begins at 7:30 am, and there are no signs of her calling it quits anytime soon.

The “Genki Grandma” and Her Inspiring Philosophy

Out of the 190,000 female employees working at McDonald’s across Japan, Tamiko Honda stands as the eldest. Her boundless energy and passion for life have earned her the endearing nickname “genki grandma.”

Despite her petite frame and advanced age, Tamiko dedicates herself wholeheartedly to her three-hour shifts each workday. Her responsibilities include maintaining the cleanliness of the McDonald’s outlet and the adjacent arcade area.

While her family encouraged her to retire, Tamiko Honda firmly believes that work is her way of staying healthy. Her secret to a fulfilling life can be distilled into two simple yet powerful words: “live positively.” It’s a mantra that may seem straightforward but proves challenging for many to emulate.

The McDonald’s Legacy of Inclusivity

Tamiko, at 90 years young, finds motivation in her work, the opportunity to engage with people, and the physical activity it provides. She shares that merely reminding herself, “I did my best again today,” and expressing gratitude for being able to work, keeps her looking forward to each new day.

The branch manager aptly acknowledges Tamiko’s indispensable presence in the store, noting that she consistently approaches her tasks with a smile, brightening the atmosphere for both customers and colleagues.

McDonald’s, known for its inclusive hiring policy, values diversity and does not discriminate based on age, gender, nationality, or disability. There is no imposed retirement age, and they welcome individuals from all walks of life.

While there are other remarkable senior employees, such as a 95-year-old man working at an outlet in Toyama Prefecture, Tamiko Honda proudly holds the title of the employee with the longest and most dedicated service. Her enduring commitment serves as an inspiring example of how a positive outlook and a love for what you do can lead to a fulfilling and joyful life, no matter your age.
