The Story of Japan’s “One-Passenger Train” That Ran Until Graduation

November 22, 2024 by Japan Daily Leave a Comment

In Japan, a country known for its dedication to service and punctuality, an extraordinary act of commitment unfolded. Japan Railway’s Hokkaido division decided to keep a rural train route active for a single passenger – a high school student commuting to school. This inspiring story took place in Kami-Shirataki Station, a small and remote stop in the northern region of Hokkaido, where trains continued to operate solely for one young girl on her journey toward education.

The Inspiring Case at Kami-Shirataki Station

Kami-Shirataki Station, a stop on the Sekihoku Main Line in Hokkaido, faced a dilemma. With a drastic decline in population in the area, ridership on this train route dwindled to nearly nothing. By 2013, the only passenger left was a high school student who relied on the train to commute to her school, Hokusei High School in Engaru Town. Despite the financial burden, Japan Railway Hokkaido (JR Hokkaido) made the decision to continue operating this route for the student, ensuring she could complete her education.

Gaining National and International Media Attention

This remarkable decision quickly caught the attention of both Japanese and international media. Stories appeared highlighting JR Hokkaido’s exceptional commitment to the local community, especially to a single student. News outlets from various countries covered the story, turning it into a symbol of Japan’s dedication to its youth and the importance of education.

The last scheduled train for Kami-Shirataki Station ran on March 25, 2016, coinciding with the student’s graduation from high school. This marked the end of a rare era in Japanese transportation history, as the station was officially closed the day after the student’s final commute.

Inspiring a Commitment to Community Responsibility

The Japan Railway’s decision to keep this train route running was met with appreciation and admiration worldwide. JR Hokkaido’s motive was driven by a commitment to social responsibility and the belief in providing educational support to all students, even if it required maintaining a non-profitable route. The Japanese government’s dedication to upholding community services, even in remote and declining areas, also shines through in this story. This act served as a reminder that corporate and government actions can have profound impacts on individuals, showcasing that community welfare and education are still valued in modern societies.

This exceptional tale of the “one-passenger train” remains a lasting example of dedication and responsibility, inspiring both Japan and the world. It underscores the potential for government and corporations to prioritize social responsibility and empathy, encouraging future generations to carry forward this spirit of compassion and support for education.
