Tokyo, March 27, 2026 – Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo in Sunshine City, Ikebukuro, will remain temporarily closed following a fatal stabbing incident that occurred inside the store on the evening of March 26, 2026.

A 21-year-old female part-time employee, Moe Harukawa from Hachioji, Tokyo, was stabbed multiple times in the neck and died at the hospital. The attacker, 26-year-old Daiki Hirokawa, whose address and occupation are unknown, stabbed the woman before turning the knife on himself and dying at the scene.

The incident took place at around 7:15 p.m. on the second floor of the popular Pokémon merchandise store, which was crowded with families and children during the spring break period. Shoppers panicked and evacuated after hearing screams, with store staff guiding customers to safety.

Background and Investigation

Police believe the two knew each other. The victim had previously reported stalking by the suspect to the police. Officers had taken measures under the Stalker Regulation Act, including issuing prohibition orders. Tokyo Metropolitan Police are investigating the case as murder and are examining the full relationship and motive.

Store Closure Announcement

The Pokémon Company and Pokémon Center Co. announced the temporary closure of Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo and the adjacent Pikachu Sweets café. In an official statement, the companies said they will give full cooperation to the police investigation and prioritize the physical and mental care of their staff.
The statement added: “We deeply apologize for the significant concern and inconvenience caused to everyone.”
The announcement has drawn some criticism online for its formal corporate tone, with some users saying it lacked direct condolences to the victim’s family.
This tragic incident has shocked many visitors, as Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo is one of the largest official Pokémon stores in Japan and a popular destination for fans.
Police continue their investigation. The store’s reopening date has not yet been announced.
