Japanese Maid Cafe Owner Shares Story of Giving Birth at 14

September 17, 2025 by Japan Daily Leave a Comment

A 37-year-old Japanese woman named Yuka, who co-owns a maid cafe with her daughter, has gained attention online after revealing she gave birth at age 14.

According to the *South China Morning Post*, Yuka, now 37, spoke to *Oricon News* about her experience. At 13, she noticed irregular periods but did not realize she was pregnant until her belly grew. She hid her pregnancy from her parents, wearing loose clothes and telling only a close friend. “I felt anxious every morning,” Yuka said. “But I’ve always been optimistic, believing there’s a way to solve things.”

When her parents found out, they were shocked but supported her with prenatal care. Yuka said, “No matter my age, my love for my child never changed from the moment I became a mother.”

With her family’s help, Yuka finished secondary school, worked part-time at a beauty salon, and attended beauty school. At 19, she opened her own salon while raising her daughter. She emphasized the importance of communication in parenting, saying, “Do not just get angry with your child, educate them. Always try to see things from their perspective.”

Now 23, Yuka’s daughter shares a close bond with her mother, described as both a “best friend” and “sister-like” relationship. They enjoy discussing beauty, fashion, and lifestyle trends. Yuka has not shared details about her daughter’s father.

After her daughter finished secondary school, they opened a maid cafe together, fulfilling a shared dream. According to *Sports Chosun*, maid cafes, popular in Japan since the early 2000s, are inspired by anime and gaming culture. Waitresses wear Victorian-style maid outfits and offer companionship and emotional support without physical contact. Yuka said running the cafe has strengthened their relationship.

The story has sparked debate on Japanese social media. One user commented, “Yuka became a mother while still a child. Even with support, she must have faced immense challenges.” Another wrote, “I admire her. She took responsibility and raised her daughter well.” However, some expressed concern, saying, “We should not romanticize teenage motherhood. This shows the need for better protection for minors.”

In Japan, the age of consent was raised from 13 to 16 in 2023. Sexual activity with anyone under 13 now carries a mandatory prison sentence of over five years, regardless of consent.
