Japan developed the “Explosive-Speed Boiling Cooker,” a pot that boils water in just over two minutes

June 10, 2025 by Japan Daily 1 Comment

Moka, Tochigi Prefecture, June 10, 2025 – A small metalworking factory in Moka, Tochigi Prefecture, has developed a high-performance cooking pot that has captured the attention of Japan’s growing outdoor recreation community. Named the “Explosive-Speed Boiling Cooker,” the pot, produced by Tamura Koki, can boil 600 milliliters of water in just over two minutes, compared to three and a half minutes for a standard pot. Priced at over 10,000 yen—more than five times the cost of a typical pot—it has sold over 1,500 units, generating sales exceeding 100 million yen.

The pot’s efficiency stems from its unique design, featuring 108 protrusions on the base that increase surface area and enhance heat conductivity. This allows for faster boiling, even in cold environments with limited fuel, making it particularly appealing to campers and hikers. Tamura Koki, a 52-year-old company specializing in precision metal cutting, leveraged its expertise in slip-resistant machining to create the pot’s distinctive base. Each unit is crafted from a 2-kilogram aluminum block, machined to include areas as thin as 0.5 millimeters, requiring significant skill to achieve a clean finish.

Tamura Koki has traditionally served as a subcontractor, producing high-precision components like camera lens mounts and telescope parts for larger firms. However, this reliance on subcontracting left the company vulnerable to price pressures. During the COVID-19 pandemic, executive director Tokoro, an avid mountain climber, sought to develop original products for the outdoor market. After an initial unsuccessful prototype with a chimney-style vent, Tokoro refined the design to focus on heat efficiency, resulting in the current pot.
The success of the “Explosive-Speed Boiling Cooker,” which gained popularity online under its nickname, prompted Tamura Koki to launch an outdoor gear brand. The brand now includes thick aluminum frying pans for better heat retention and compact, reusable fuel storage canisters. These products have helped the company recover from the economic challenges of the pandemic and reduce its dependence on subcontracting.

The rise in outdoor activities in Japan, with a reported 8.5 million campers in 2024 according to the Japan Auto Camping Federation, has fueled demand for high-performance gear. Tamura Koki’s shift to a “market-in” approach—designing products based on user needs rather than solely technical capabilities—has been key to its success. Tokoro emphasized the potential for such products to showcase Japan’s craftsmanship to international tourists, highlighting the country’s manufacturing expertise.
Background and Context

Japan’s outdoor recreation market has grown steadily, driven by increased interest in camping and hiking, particularly since the pandemic. The Japan Auto Camping Federation reported a 10% increase in camping participation from 2022 to 2024, reflecting a broader trend of domestic tourism and outdoor activities. Small manufacturers like Tamura Koki are capitalizing on this trend by applying specialized skills to niche markets. The company’s transition from subcontracting to developing branded products aligns with efforts by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to encourage small businesses to innovate and reduce reliance on larger firms.
