Japanese Photographer Kimiko Nishimoto, Known as “Selfie Grandma,” Dies at 97

Tokyo, June 12, 2025 – Kimiko Nishimoto, a Japanese photographer widely recognized as the “selfie grandma,” passed away on June 9, 2025, at the age of 97 due to bile duct cancer. Nishimoto gained international attention for her playful and humorous self-portraits, which she began creating at the age of 72, amassing a significant following on Instagram.

Nishimoto’s photography career started later in life after a diverse professional background that included working as a hairdresser and a professional cyclist. Her distinctive style, characterized by self-portraits that often featured her as the subject of lighthearted and whimsical scenarios, captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Her work was celebrated for its creativity and humor, leading to multiple exhibitions across Japan.

Born in 1928, Nishimoto’s late entry into photography highlighted her ability to embrace new challenges regardless of age. Her Instagram account, where she shared her vibrant and imaginative photos, grew to attract thousands of followers, earning her global recognition. According to a 2017 BBC report, her first photography course was taken on a whim, sparking a passion that led to her unique artistic contributions.

Nishimoto’s passing marks the end of a remarkable career that inspired many to pursue creativity at any stage of life. Her work continues to be featured in galleries and online platforms, preserving her legacy as a beloved figure in Japanese photography.
