Japan Megaquake: Nankai Trough Could Kill 298,000, Experts Warn

March 31, 2025 by Japan Daily 1 Comment

Tokyo, Japan – A recent Japanese government report has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Nankai Trough, a 900 km-long ocean trench off Japan’s Pacific coast. The report estimates that such an event could result in approximately 298,000 deaths and cause economic damage of ¥270 trillion (about $1.8 trillion).

The Nankai Trough has a history of producing significant earthquakes approximately every 100 to 150 years. The worst-case scenario envisions a winter evening quake, leading to widespread building collapses, tsunamis, and fires. Shizuoka Prefecture could face the highest casualties, with an estimated 101,000 deaths. Additionally, the report projects between 26,000 and 52,000 disaster-related deaths due to factors like deteriorating health conditions in evacuation shelters.

While the projected death toll has decreased from earlier estimates due to improved preparedness measures, the anticipated economic impact has risen by 26%, reflecting inflation and enhanced data analysis. In response to these findings, the Japanese government plans to revise disaster prevention strategies and establish a new agency for disaster prevention by fiscal 2026.

Given the 80% probability of such an earthquake occurring within the next 30 years, these measures are critical to mitigate potential devastation. The government is urging citizens to be prepared and stay informed about emergency procedures.

Experts emphasize the importance of continued investment in infrastructure, early warning systems, and public education to minimize the impact of a potential Nankai Trough earthquake. As Japan braces for this looming threat, the nation remains committed to protecting its citizens and reducing the economic and human toll of this natural disaster.
