Japanese Man Detained in China for Bold Great Wall Prank

March 15, 2025 by Japan Daily Leave a Comment

Beijing, China – A Japanese man in his 20s was detained in China earlier this year after a stunt at the Great Wall that authorities deemed a violation of public security laws. The incident, which occurred in early January, involved the man exposing his buttocks at the historic site while a female companion photographed the act. The pair was held for approximately two weeks before being deported to Japan, according to reports released on March 14.

The man described the act as a prank to Japanese embassy officials, but it has ignited widespread criticism in both nations. In China, where the Great Wall is a cherished national symbol, the incident drew over 60 million views on Weibo, with users expressing anger and calling for stricter penalties. Historical tensions between China and Japan, rooted in Japan’s occupation during the 20th century, amplified the backlash. Meanwhile, in Japan, many condemned the behavior as “shameful,” distancing it from the country’s reputation for courteous travelers.

This case adds to a series of incidents involving foreign nationals in China, highlighting the cultural sensitivities surrounding the nation’s landmarks. Authorities have not released further details about the individuals involved.
