Vinland Saga Author Reveals The Superpower That He Wants To Have

Makoto Yukimura, the author of Vinland Saga, revealed in his recent tweet on Aug 28, 2022, that he wishes to posses a superpower; a superpower he claims all manga artists need, and not just him.

What if you are someone who knows what interests people. Say for instance, you can predict exactly what a person needs as his birthday present. That would be an interesting skill right?

Yukimura wished to posses a similar superpower. He wanted the ability to know what exactly his readers wanted to read, so that he could create it.

“That’s a skill I’d like to have, and manga artists need it,” Yukimura tweeted. “I want to be able to create what the readers want to read the most right now. Hey, that’s a superpower!”

According to Yukimura, he has been drawing what he wanted and somehow his works happened to sell. However, he does not want to term this success as accidental or as a mere coincidence.

Yukimura believes that he has been trying his best to please the readers in his own way and that it’s the same with all manga artists. And there is no way that an author’s work can be safe from being influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

He compared wanting to please everybody to fussing over a fireworks display that is meant for everyone.

“In the end, you can’t get away from subjectivity. It’s like making a fuss over fireworks display that you thought would be good for everyone…”

The author was apparently making a point that, unless he had some sort of superpower, it would be hard for him to appease all the readers of his work.

Fans responded to his tweet with words of encouragement, asking Yukimura to not worry about pleasing everyone and just continue drawing what he wants.

“It’s impossible to make everyone like something, so write how you want and make the decisions you want to make. It’s just like no matter who we are, there’s always someone that won’t like us,” a response to his tweet read.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1976, Makoto Yukimura made his debut with Planetes manga, which was serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine from 1999. The manga won the Seiun Award in the comic category in 2002, and received an anime adaptation in 2003.

In 2005, Yukimura began serializing Vinland Saga in Kodansha’s monthly magazine Afternoon. The work was highly acclaimed and won the Grand Prize in the Manga Division of the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the General Division.

As of May 2022, the the chapters of the manga have been compiled into 26 tankobon volumes.

An anime adaptation by WIT Studio aired on December 2019. A second season of the anime, animated by MAPPA, is set to air in January 2023.
