Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher, designated hitter and outfielder who currently plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. He was born on July 5, 1994 and his nickname is “Showtime” (MLB).
In the past, he was a member of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters team which competed in the Pacific League of the Nippon Professional Baseball organization.
In the 2012 draft, the Fighters selected Ohtani with the first overall pick. Between the years 2013 and 2017, he was an outfielder and a pitcher with the Fighters of the Nippon Professional Baseball league. Ohtani’s pitch of 165 kilometers per hour (102.5 miles per hour) was the fastest ever recorded by a Japanese pitcher in the history of the NPB.
After the conclusion of the 2017 campaign, the Fighters transferred Ohtani to Major League Baseball where he ultimately signed with the Angels. He was awarded the Rookie of the Year title in the American League (AL) in 2018 as well as the Most Valuable Player award in the AL in 2021.
Ohtani’s 2021 season was formally recognized by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred as being “historically significant” and having a “major impact on the sport.” This was because Ohtani became the first two-way player in the history of Major League Baseball to have 10+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases as a hitter and 100+ strikeouts and 10+ pitching appearances as a pitcher in the same season while also holding at least a share of the major league lead in home runs in fourteen.
He was also the first player in MLB history to be an All-Star as both a pitcher and a hitter. He was a starter in the 2021 All-Star Game as both the AL’s manager-selected starting pitcher (who won) and the fans’ starting designated hitter (as the leadoff hitter).
