Bouke de Vries is a Dutch artist who creates magnificent sculptures with broken ceramics to show the beauty of damaged things. He uses the kintsugi technique (the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery) to mend the fragmented pieces.
In an interview with DeMilked, the artist revealed that he started making them about 12 years ago in his spare time in the evening and on weekends. Vries further elaborated, “The idea stemmed from my work as a ceramics restorer, I was working on broken ceramics every day and saw beauty in the damaged pieces and decided to make pieces celebrating this.”
The artist also shared his creative process– “The creative process starts with the ceramics I find, I live with them for a while and then suggestions of what I could do with them come to my mind.”
“It’s such a wonderful feeling and just makes me happy. I feel very privileged making a living doing what I love,” he added. Check out some of his wonderful works in the gallery below.
